PicoSearch Peculiarities:   Helping You to Access THNC's Website
A few suggestions that may help you enjoy your searching more:
  1. How To Search: Type words into the entry box that you want to search for, then click [Search].
    • Any Word: Just type one or more words to find any of the words. [ Find ANY ] is the usual default.
    • All Words: Type more than one word and select [ Find ALL ] to find all of the words.
Or you can use Booleans (see below).
    • Exact Phrase: "...." (surround your words with quotation marks)
You can search for exact phrases by surrounding them in double quotes ("..."). Or you can just type the words and select [ Find EXACT phrase ]. Punctuation must be the same to be found between words, for example "Smith, John"
    • Boolean Operators... + -
Use + in front of each word or a quoted phrase that you require.
Use - in front of each word that you want to exclude.
    • Boolean Expressions... AND OR NOT ( )
Use AND, OR, NOT, or parentheses to form a Boolean expression. PicoSearch interprets the following: AND requires, OR allows, NOT excludes. Use parentheses for nesting -- Pico interprets parenthesized expressions before doing what is not inside parentheses. Use double quotes to protect the words "and", "or", or "not" in a phrase.

    Boolean Search Examples:
     Query   Gets the documents with
home network   'home' or 'network' or both
"home network"   the phrase 'home network'
     +home +network   'home' and 'network'
+home -network   'home' but not 'network'
+cars -"park themselves"   'cars' but not 'park themselves'
(park OR themselves) AND NOT cars   'park' or 'themselves', and without 'cars'

  2. No wild cards (pound sign, asterisk, etc.) so trailing letters or symbols create separate new words.
  3. When the Search button does not work, you might need to tap it twice (to close Auto-Completion box, then to start your search). You can begin each search by tapping Return, or you can use the words that are forming in the Auto-Completion box (just below where you are typing your search word).
  4. Stopwords have been removed. They are not retrievable in searches.
    • helping verbs (be, is, are, was, were, did, can, will, etc.)
    • articles (a, an, the, that, each, both, neither, etc.)
    • prepositions and conjunctions (at, on, in, for, between, etc.)
    • wh- words (who, how, what, where, why, which, etc.)
    • inquiry words (say, use, tell, show, want, mean, explain, etc.)
  5. Capitalization doesn't matter.
  6. The ranked results will come from a total match on the words and phrases which you supply, so try to think of several specific terms for your topic and spell them correctly. It may help to include important plurals and derived words too, like [address addresses contact contacting information] .
  7. Some words don't work. You'll key-in a word, tap Search repeatedly, and nothing happens. It is a mystery to us, but it looks like - occasionally - a part of their system will go down, and no one is on call to fix it. If this happens to you, clear the input field, and retype your search term. As you type the letters, watch the words as they begin to appear in the Auto-Completion list. If your word is there, click on it to begin your retrieval.            6-14-2011
